 1,000 TREES

As Hassell's earliest environmental work, 1,000 Trees In the early summer of 1995 Hassell headed to Northern Canada to work with a reforestation company team, with the goal of planting over 1,000 trees.

Her older brother had worked for the company for many years and helped her to make the connection. Camping in the middle of nowhere in a tent for months in vast empty valleys with icy clear lakes, the majestic Rockies standing near. Far from civilization, Hassell describes "Walking endless expanses without a soul in sight there comes a moment when your body gets lost in the grandeur of nature and time."

Experiencing first hand the massive destruction caused by industrial production of wood, "Each site we came onto, was like walking into a dead zone. There was a looming eerie silence that we were there to witness and break as we planted in thousands of new seedling trees. "
